Master of Science in Kinesiology

As a post-professional exercise science program, this broad-scope health and fitness degree was developed to build on the foundation of your experience in exercise physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics or related fields. A bachelor’s degree is required, and prospective exercise sciencestudentsmust be a health, wellness, sport, or fitness professional with at least two years of experience, or be a training professional with an NCCA accreditation or a licensed healthcare professional.

Students pursuing this Kinesiology degree will choose one of the five specialty certificate course groupings, or tracks, based on your unique interests and aptitudes: Adaptive Sports, Corrective Exercise and Orthopedic Rehabilitation, Exercise and Sports Psychology, Geriatric Exercise Science, and Sports Conditioning. A dual track option is available, allowing students to enroll in two of the specialty tracks.

The online Kinesiology degree program contains 42-credit hours of study (45-credit hours with a dual track option): including a week-long conference at the ATSU Human Movement Institute.

The Exercise & Sports Psychology track combines the science and practice of the psychology of exercise, mental health and performance to teach students the principles of creating programs that trigger behavior change and maximize long term adherence. Courses include Psychology, Physical Activity and Health; Exercise and Mental Health; Applied Sports Psychology; and Principles of Adherence and Motivation.

Geriatric Exercise Science

The Geriatric Exercise Science track provides learning opportunities for fitness professionals to focus on the physical and psychological principles of exercise and movement science among older adults. Courses include Physical Dimensions of Aging and Physical Activity; Psychosocial Dimensions of Aging and Physical Activity; Exercise Prescription for Older Adults; and Motivational Strategies for Physical Activity among Older Adults.

Sports Conditioning

The Sports Conditioning track combines current knowledge and practice in sports conditioning to enable students to develop advanced training programs for athletes. Courses include Measurement of Sports Fitness; Muscular Fitness Development; Speed, Agility, and Quickness; and the Science and Practice of Metabolic Conditioning.

Adaptive Sports

The Adaptive Sports track is designed to provide the allied healthcare and fitness professional with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to effectively work in the adaptive sports field, including program management, coaching, strength and conditioning, health care services, and advocacy. Courses include, Introduction to Paralympic and Adaptive Sport, Establishing and Managing an Adaptive Sports Program, Assessment of the Para Athlete, and Comprehensive Adaptive Sport & Activity Analysis.

Corrective Exercise & Orthopedic Rehabilitation

The Corrective Exercise & Orthopedic Rehabilitation track is designed to provide the allied health care and fitness professional with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to design and implement exercise programs for individuals with musculoskeletal and movement dysfunction. Courses include, Human Movement Dysfunction, Functional Assessment for Development of Corrective and Post-Rehabilitation Exercise Programs, Post-Rehabilitation Exercise, and Corrective Exercise Programming.

        Don Altman, DDS, DHSc, EdD, MPH, MBA, MA, is the Dean of the College of Graduate Health Studies (CGHS) at A.T. Still University (ATSU). He also serves as director of public health at ATSU’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH). Dr. Altman has been with ATSU since October 2006.

        Dr. Altman graduated from the University of Texas Dental Branch (DDS) in 1983. He completed his Master of Public Health degree at the University of Texas School of Public Health in 1989 and became Board Certified in Dental Public Health in 1999. Dr. Altman completed his MBA at the University of Phoenix (2002) and a MA in Bioethics from Midwestern University (2004). He graduated with a Doctor in Health Science (DHSc) degree in March 2012 from the Arizona School of Health Sciences at A.T. Still University (ATSU-ASHS) and his EdD from Southern New Hampshire University in March 2016.

        Dr. Altman has worked for The City of Houston, the State of Texas, the State of Arizona, as well as The Principal Financial Group. Dr. Altman’s public health experience includes: serving as President of the Arizona State Board Dental Examiners; serving as President of the Arizona Public Health Association; volunteering with Health Volunteers Overseas (Cambodia and Vietnam); Director of the National Oral Health Leadership Institute; and serving as the Consumer Representative to the Dental Products Panel for the Food and Drug Administration. On May 1, 2012 he was appointed as a Director to The American Board of Dental Public Health and is currently the president.

        Dr. Altman’s research interests are currently centered on public health and higher education. He has published articles in the Journal of Dental Education, Journal of the American Dental Association, Public Health Reports, Special Care in Dentistry, and Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology.

His doctoral degree was conferred by The Ohio State University in 1995, where his studies focused on exercise physiology and nutrition. His current scholarship efforts are aimed at cardiopulmonary fitness throughout the lifespan.

        He joined ATSU in 2009, started his associate dean role in 2020, and is now in his 25th year of higher education and administration. Dr. Farris has over a decade of academic administration and assessment experience as a department chair and has strived for overall educational excellence in that role. He completed the American Physical Therapy Association’s Education Leadership Institute Fellowship, is an Educational Leadership Institute Fellow, and has served on the board of directors for the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy before joining ATSU-CGHS.

        He enjoys serving the community, and one our nation’s most underserved populations, through his role as a clinical director for the FUNfitness program that is part of the Special Olympics Healthy Athlete’s program. His home is in the west where outdoor activity and sunshine is abundant. Work-life integration is a goal and he “sharpens the saw” through golfing, cycling, fishing, hiking, cooking, brewing, and yardwork.

        Dr. Rogers has a combination of academic and applied experience in the exercise field. She received her bachelor of science degree in psychology from the University of Arizona and went on to earn her PhD in Kinesiology, with a focus on sport and exercise psychology, from Arizona State University, in 2003. Dr. Rogers is a consultant and faculty member for the American Council on Exercise where she creates courses and serves as a subject matter expert for curriculum development and continued education.

        Dr. Rogers speaks nationally to fitness professionals and writes extensively on the role of the personal trainer in triggering lasting behavior change and on the creation of exercise environments that promote long term adherence. In addition, Dr. Rogers works with athletes and teams, helping them realize the control they have over their athletic experience and performance. Dr. Rogers is passionate about getting people moving and helping them incorporate physical activity into their daily lives.

Both the Master’s of Science and certificate in kinesiology programs will admit human movement, health and fitness, and healthcare professionals with diverse graduate education, work history, and life experiences who have demonstrated capacity to pursue a rigorous course of graduate study and increasingly responsible positions in the health and fitness industries.

Prospective kinesiology students are selected by considering the overall qualities of the applicant through application content, academic record, prior experience, and personal motivation.

Qualified candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree or above, and be a health, wellness, sport, or fitness professional with at least two years of professional experience, or be a training professional with an NCCA accredited certification (ACE, ACSM, IFPA, NASM, NCSF, NESTA, NFPT, NSCA, Cooper Institute) or licensed healthcare professional (ATC, PT, DC, OT, PA, RN, RD, etc.).

        • Completed and signed admissions application along with a nonrefundable application fee.

        • Anaccredited degreefrom a university recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (bachelor’s degree for masters programs and a master’s degree for doctoral programs). Master of Science in Kinesiology Curriculum Overview

This program in exercise science and kinesiology offers an experience-based curriculum that prepares students to be leaders in advanced kinesiology, with expertise in functional anatomy, physiology, human movement, behavior change, functional assessment, fitness and exercise program design.

The online kinesiology degree program consists of 42-credit hours of study: 30 credit hours comprise core course work and 12 credit hours of specialty-track/certificate course work.

All of the below tracks are available as stand-alone certificates to enhance your existing credentials, without the need to enroll in the complete Master of Science in Kinesiology program. Students interested in a kinesiology certificate should select the corresponding option on theATSU-CGHS application.

Year 1

  • Evidence-Based Practice and Research Methods+

    • Credits: 3
      The objective of this course is to introduce the kinesiology professional to the concepts of evidence-based practice. Students will learn how to access high quality literature, integrate best research with clinical expertise and client values for optimum service, and will be encouraged to participate in learning and research activities to the extent feasible. The course will provide the kinesiology professional with graduate level knowledge and skills related to appropriate research methods and study design, conducting a literature review, creating a research proposal, the role of institutional review for human subjects’ protection, and evaluation of the research literature. Emphasis will be placed upon critical appraisal and application of the kinesiology literature.
  • Motor Control+

    • Credits: 3
      This course provides a foundation for understanding the current principles, theoretical perspectives, and research related to motor control and learning, and how different factors influence learning and performance. Neural and mechanical mechanisms underlying motor behavior and the variables influencing motor control and learning will be addressed, with an emphasis on the application of theoretical perspectives, principles, and research to instructional and practical settings.
  • Exercise Science+

    • Credits: 3
      The objective of this course is to explore the physiological principles of exercise. Specific topics include the functions of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, neuromuscular and neuroendocrine systems, energy expenditure and bioenergetics, and body composition.
  • Functional Anatomy+

    • Credits: 3
      This course is designed to enhance the student’s knowledge and awareness of human anatomy, specifically as its structure relates to function of the musculoskeletal system and human movement. Following this course, the student should be able to describe, discuss, recognize, and evaluate musculoskeletal structure and function from an anatomical perspective in the context of clinical practice.
  • Functional Biomechanics+

    • Credits: 3
      The objective of this course is to study the biomechanical properties of joint structures and connective tissues, including histology and morphology, with particular emphasis on sport and exercise movements. Biomechanics of musculotendinous structures, joint capsules, ligaments, peripheral nerves, bones, and articular cartilage will be presented.

      The objective of this course is to learn how to facilitate and educate clients about general nutrition recommendations to maintain health, alter body composition, and improve performance. The course will focus on providing sound advice to clients regarding the nutritional requirements for general health, lean mass gain, body fat loss, anaerobic athletic performance, and aerobic athletic performance. This course must be taken before KINE 5100.

The objective of this course is to gain knowledge and skills for building complete exercise programs that are unique to client needs, abilities, and goals, including performing and incorporating subjective and objective assessment results and appropriate medical history information. The integration of exercise principles and behavioral techniques that motivate the participant to be compliant will be emphasized. This course will focus on integrated training and injury prevention techniques through the interdependent relationship of flexibility, core, balance, power, speed, and strength.

      This course is designed to enhance the student’s knowledge and awareness of concepts related to fundamental movement necessary for optimal function and performance. Following this course, the student should be able to discuss, recognize, and evaluate factors that contribute to movement dysfunction.
  • Functional Assessment of Movement Patterns+

    • Credits: 3
      Movement dysfunction and movement patterns provide the theoretical foundation to examine functional movement assessments. Focus will be on the critical evaluation of common movement assessment approaches used in injury prevention, post-rehabilitation, and corrective exercise.
  • Post Rehabilitation Exercise+

    • Credits: 3
      The objective of this course is to learn how to design and apply training programs for individuals who are transitioning from a rehabilitative setting to a more traditional exercise environment. This course will provide an overview to a systematic approach for post-rehabilitation exercise. This course will focus on reducing the risk of injury while training and performing activities of daily living along with identifying and applying strategies for program application, communicating goals and rationale, and correlating assessment outcomes with individualized programs.

      This course will develop the knowledge and skill for the implementation of corrective exercise theories and models to promote improved human movement and function.

      This course is designed to enhance the student’s knowledge and understanding of aging and related psychological and social aspects, including concepts and theories of aging, demographic factors of aging, mental health, stress and coping, social dynamics, religiosity and spirituality, quality of life, models of successful aging, and death and dying. An exploration of the role of physical activity in psychosocial health and well-being will be interwoven, where applicable, in the study of these various aspects of aging.
  • Exercise Prescription for Older Adults+

      A study of fitness instruction and programming for older adults, including importance of physical activity for older adults, pre-program assessment, prescription for various modes of exercise, and considerations for older adults with specific chronic disease conditions.
  • Physical Dimensions of Aging+

    • Credits: 3
      A study of the physical changes that occur with aging including its impact on the various body systems as well as on motor control and physical functioning. In addition, a thorough examination of the impact of regular physical activity on the physical health of older adults will be addressed.
  • Motivational Strategies for Physical Activity Among Older Adults+

      A study of the methods for helping people to develop and maintain physically active lifestyles with specific emphasis on older adults. Theories of health behavior change will be discussed with practical applications for individuals, groups, and communities.

Sports Conditioning Track

  • Measurement of Sports Fitness+

    • Credits: 3
      This course will cover sport-specific fitness and performance testing. The objective of the course is to enable the student to develop a sport-specific, age-appropriate testing battery, reliably conduct the testing, and correctly interpret the results.
  • Speed, Agility, and Quickness+

    • Credits: 3
      This course will cover the physiological basis for speed, agility, and quickness as well as practical methods for developing such qualities among athletes of various developmental abilities. Focus will be put on sport-specific training modes.
  • Muscular Fitness Development+

    • Credits: 3
      This course is designed to enhance the knowledge of muscular performance capabilities, differentiate between muscular functions as it relates to sport performance, and develop training programs to enhance specific performance profiles.
  • The Science and Practice of Metabolic Conditioning+

    • Credits: 3
      This course will cover the physiology of energy production as it relates to performance in various sporting events as well as methods for improving fitness and preparing for the metabolic demands of competition. Causes of fatigue will be addressed along with practical methods for assessing sport-specific metabolic fitness. The course examines various methodologies, training philosophies, and current topics in metabolic training.

Dual Track Option

学生追求双轨选项不会take the Advanced Fitness Nutrition, Current Topics in Human Movement Science, or Advanced Exercise Prescription courses. Instead, they will enroll in two of the specialized track series of courses. This will result in a total of 45 credit hours.
